2025 Chippewa County Road Construction Updates July 3

As construction season continues throughout the region, below are various construction projects that may affect your travel through the area.
2025 Chippewa County Road Construction Projects
US 53 in Chippewa County
US 53 is under construction from 40th Avenue in Lake Hallie to County B in the town of Tilden. This project is expected to continue through late June 2026.
- Currently motorists will encounter single-lane closures on northbound US 53 between 40th and 100th avenues and southbound US 53 between 40th Avenue and County Q.
- The off-ramp from northbound and southbound US 53 to Business 29/County X and the on-ramp to northbound US 53 from Business 29/County X are opened July 3rd.
- The on-ramps to north- and southbound US 53 from County B and off-ramp from northbound US 53 to County B are tentatively scheduled to close Monday, July 7.
- The speed limit is reduced in portions of the work zone.

US 53: Golf Rd in Eau Claire to 40th Ave in Lake Hallie
US 53 is under construction from Golf Road in Eau Claire to 40th Avenue in Lake Hallie making repairs to or removing and replacing segments of concrete pavement; overlaying southbound US 53 with asphalt from WIS 312 (North Crossing) in Eau Claire to County OO in Lake Hallie; completing work at various structures; replacing guardrail; and placing new pavement markings.
The project is scheduled for completion in late October.
- Construction will begin on southbound US 53 at Golf Road and work north.
- Because of traffic volumes, much of the construction is being completed at night, but some work will be done during daylight hours.
- The bridge carrying Melby Street over US 53 is tentatively scheduled to be closed to traffic for at least a week starting at 6 a.m. Monday, July 7.
- Work north of the North Crossing (WIS 312) will occur after July 7.
- When southbound lanes and interchanges ramps are complete, crews will switch to the northbound US 53 lanes beginning at Golf Road.
- Motorists will encounter single-land closures during nonpeak travel times, along with single-lane or full closure of interchange ramps.
- During the closure, the interchange ramps will remain open, but motorists wanting to cross US 53 will have to use the WIS 312 or WIS 124/County OO exits.

WIS 29: 50th Ave Interchange and 50th Ave and County J Intersection
Removing and replacing the bridge, building retaining walls along east- and westbound WIS 29 at the abutments, replacing the roadway approach pavement and the pavement on the interchange ramps and replacing culverts, guardrail and pavement markings. This project will increase the vertical clearance of the bridge over the highway. For the 50th Avenue/County J intersection project: Constructing a single-lane roundabout, completing approach work on all legs leading into the roundabout, increasing the roadway profile an average of three feet to accommodate the profile rise of the new bridge and replacing storm sewer. Project completing is schedule for early September.
Motorists can expect the following impacts on:
- WIS 29:
- The 50th Avenue interchange is closed, and traffic is being detoured via County J and County X.
- The inside shoulders on east- and westbound WIS 29 are closed at 50th Avenue.
- Motorists will encounter single-lane closures between County X and County J and reduced speed limit of 55 mph during working hours.
- WIS 29 will be closed in both directions from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Currently, the work is planned to occur Monday and Tuesday nights; however, operations are weather dependent and could be pushed to Wednesday night if necessary. Traffic will be detoured via County J and County X.
- County J:
- The highway is open to traffic at 50th Avenue and will remain open throughout construction, using temporary roadways and flagging operations.
- 50th Avenue:
- The road is closed between Stillson Elementary School and 171st Streets through September.
- Traffic is being detoured using 160th Street, 40th Avenue, County J and County X.
- The road also is closed east of County J.
- Access to residences and businesses is being maintained throughout construction using temporary roads and flagging.
Duncan Creek Bridge north of Bloomer at 190th Ave and 225th Ave
- The road is closed at the bridge due to replacing the bridge. Construction will continue until early July.
City of Chippewa Falls Road Construction Projects
WIS 124 South Resurfacing (Duncan Creek to Bridge Street)
Removing a portion of the existing pavement and placing new asphalt pavement; replacing storm sewer on Elm Street; modifying traffic signals at Columbia Street, Grand Avenue, Central Street, Spring Street and River Street; and updating sidewalk curb ramps.
- WIS 124 South will remain open but expect shoulder closures.
- Pedestrians can expect temporary accommodations where curb ramp work is being completed.
- Construction is scheduled for completion in late October.

River Street Project (West City Limits to Fleet St)
- Through traffic will be maintained throughout this project.
- USH 53 ramps will open July 3rd.
- The River St project is anticipated to be completed by July 11th.
There will be times when the roadway is under a one lane road condition with a flagging condition. Use caution and be prepared to stop.
Maynard Street Project (Front St to Grand Ave)
The project includes underground utility work (storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water), curb and gutter, street surface, driveways and sidewalk. The project began on June 13th.
Macomber Street Project (Wheaton St to Huron St)
The project includes underground utility work (storm sewer, sanitary sewer, water), curb and gutter, street surface, driveways and sidewalk.
- Work is scheduled to being June 30th
