2026 Construction Updates

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) has upcoming and ongoing road construction projects on WIS 124 and US 53 in Chippewa County. These improvements are aimed at enhancing road quality, safety, and infrastructure, but will bring temporary traffic impacts.



WIS 124 from County S to WIS 64

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is designing a resurfacing project on WIS 124 in Chippewa County between County S and WIS 64. WisDOT has created exhibits and an interactive map to help provide you with an overview of the project (8610-08-72) and the proposed improvements.

Proposed Improvements:

  • Milling and overlaying the roadway
  • Improving culverts / extending culverts*
  • Replacing culverts at select locations
  • Making bridge improvements
  • Upgrading guardrail
  • Cleaning ditches at select locations

Minor right-of-way impacts are anticipated near culvert extensions.

Traffic Impacts:

  • Motorists will encounter lane closures controlled by flagging operations will be required or the duration of the project.
  • Temporary traffic signals maintaining one lane of traffic will be required for bridge work between 112th Avenue and 140th Street.

Southbound WIS 124: Bay and River Street

  • Bay Street/River Street intersection will be closed April 6-30th
  • There will be signal work at various other intersections through April 30

Southbound WIS 124: Duncan Creek Bridge to North Bridge Street

  • Started in 2025; work set to resume April 6th.

WIS 124: Duncan Creek Bridge to County S

  • Work scheduled to begin April 13.
  • Duncan Creek Bridge (bridge at Leinie’s) to CTH S
  • Will remain open to traffic, will be flagged
  • There will be a point when the roundabout at 124 and CTH S and north will be closed for 14 days
  • Date TBD as they coordinate with Hwy 53 construction
  • Detour will be Hwy 53, CTH B and River Street

2026 US 53 pavement replacement project:

Work in 2026 includes replacing southbound pavement south of County N

Construction on the third year of a multiyear pavement replacement project on US 53 in Chippewa County from 40th Avenue in Lake Hallie to County B in Tilden resumed Monday, March 2.

This segment of US 53 has reached the end of its service life. To address this, construction in 2026 includes:

  • Replacing the pavement on southbound US 53 south of County N
  • Widening the shoulder on the ramp from Business 29/County X to southbound US 53
  • Placing polymer overlays on the southbound US 53 bridges over the Chippewa River and BUS 29/County X
  • Replacing guardrail
  • Completing culvert work
  • Building permanent maintenance crossovers
  • Installing new pavement markings and shoulder rumble strips
  • Removing temporary crossovers used during construction

During construction in 2026, US 53 will remain open to traffic, but motorists will encounter lane and interchange ramp closures, including the following:

  • The ramp from BUS 29/County X to southbound US 53 will be closed from March 2 until Memorial Day.
  • The ramp from southbound US 53 to BUS 29/County X and ramps on and off northbound US 53 at the BUS 29/County X interchange will be closed intermittently from March 2 to late June.
